WHO HOSTS?

It is hosted by two women of different generations, an Adoptive Mother, Sally Baffour (AKA Auntie Sally) and an adopted Foundling, Judith Alexis Craig.

Sally Baffour is an adoption consultant and an experienced single adopter (of Ghanaian heritage) with trans-culturally adopted twin boy and girl, now 32 years old, of Caribbean heritage. Sally, originally an interior architect, changed professions to become an adoption consultant after she adopted her twins.

Judith Alexis Craig is a foundling of Haitian heritage who was found as a newborn baby in a ditch in Haiti. She was adopted as a baby transracially into a White Canadian family and eventually became a Social Worker working in the UK for 12 years as an Adoption Social Worker. She is now back in Canada, working as a Social Worker and an Adoption Therapist.

When Where To whom?

Co-hosted by Sally, who is based in the UK and Judith in Canada, the online podcast is open to the public and focuses on the complexities of adoption. It is transmitted monthly through zoom on the last Sunday of every month at 7.30 pm (BST Time zone).

Why?

Judith and Sally come from both ends of the adoption spectrum, with a wealth of unique personal and professional experiences gathered in over 30 years (each) in adoption and fostering. With their unique and expansive knowledge in the field, they decided to join forces to shine a light on all aspects of adoption and fostering, with a particular focus on giving voice to the historically underrepresented voices and experiences of adopted people and biological parents.

How

At Adoption Dialog, we will interview guests and explore topics related to birth (origin) parents, adopted children/adults, adoptive parents, foster parents, and looked-after children/adults and all the issues that affect them. The podcast provides a unique opportunity to explore the complex layers of adoption. As the programme is online, we are reaching a broad cross-section of people in the UK and abroad.

Objective

Educate the public constructively about adoption issues and offer support and guidance to all on the adoption journey.

Goal

Our goal is to:

– Dispel myths and misconceptions about adoption

– Provide a safe space for people on the adoption journey to heal through sharing and storytelling

– Provide peer support and coaching to adoptive parents

– Voice to those with a ‘living’ experience of adoption

– Provide therapeutic support to adoptees and adopters

– Signpost people with a ‘living’ adoption experience to appropriate support agencies.

Outputs Services we will be offering

Provide an information gateway for the public and prospective adoptive families: – on the adoption process – educate them on the core adoption and fostering issues – Encourage prospective adopters to come forward to adopt to reduce the significant number of children waiting for permanent placements, homes, and families. – Identify and support families willing and able to provide homes for children with complex needs. – Encourage those who want to adopt to contact us to help and guide them with hand-holding support.

Statement

We believe that wherever possible, taking children from their birth parents and placing them for adoption must always be a last resort because family preservation is the most important support for any child. Therefore, whenever safe to do so, more supports need to be provided to help families maintain their children’s care within their own families and family network.
